The synoptic Gethsemane A critical study

The scope of this work is a methodical investigation of the account of Jesus'prayer between the Supper and the Arrest, as it is reported in the three synoptic gospels. In this respect it is an exegetical study. Its purpose is to determine as closely as possible the specific meaning which the authors of these accounts intended them to bear in the context of their own gospels. In this respect it is a study in biblical theology. The plan of the work is simple: part one is a detailed consideration of the empirical data of our problem in each of the synoptic accounts, dealing with the questions of textual criticism, exegesis and literary analysis. Part two is a theory of sources and redactions, which offers three explanatory hypotheses to answer the genetic questions raised by the data analyzed in part one. Part three is a theological synthesis of the meaning of the synoptic accounts and their sources, based on the findings of part one and two.

The invasion of Sennacherib in 701 BCE is a classic issue for both biblical scholars and historians alike. Extant Assyrian, Biblical and even Greek texts all refer to Sennacherib and many different theories have been put forward in attempts to understand the relationship between these various accounts. Despite the rise of new literary-rhetorical criticism in biblical studies, studies tackling the problem of Sennacherib s invasion have been dominated by historical-critical work on the issue and have virtually ignored rhetorical methodology. Against this trend, this book employs both traditional historical-critical methods and newer rhetorical methods in an effort to utilize the biblical texts in a historical reconstruction of this famous Assyrian assault on ancient Judah.
