Pedro Zamora Sexuality and AIDS Education

Pedro Zamora Sexuality and AIDS Education

" Documenting gay Cuban-American activist Pedro Zamora's appearances onscreen, in person, and in print, Pedro Zamora, Sexuality and AIDS Education reflects on the power of mediated autobiography and testifies to the ongoing importance of working together to combat HIV/AIDS and injustice. Informed by the assessments of 1980s and 1990s AIDs activism offered by Alex Juhasz, Jose Esteban Munoz, Simon Watney, Roger Hallas, Randy Shilts, Paul Monette, Marlon Riggs, and others, Pullen's study details how the good-looking Zamora became a skilled educator who excelled at reaching out to youth, especially queer youth, and people of color. Diagnosed as HIV-positive at the age of 17, Zamora learned how to be charismatically convincing, conjoining vulnerability, transparency, sincerity, warmth, and strength. His articulately 'out' role on MTV's 1994 reality show, The Real World: San Francisco, was a highlight; sadly, he died that same year, aged only 22. Kudos to Pullen for so eloquently marshaling Pedro Zamora's life, work, and love, for the present, toward the future." -Chris Holmlund, Arts and Sciences Excellence Professor of Cinema Studies, Women's Studies and French, University of Tennessee; and author of Impossible Bodies "Christopher Pullen gives Pedro Zamora's extraordinary life compelling form in this illuminating account. He urges to rethink our notions of self and identity. Our lives depend on them, and this book makes clear how very true that is." -Bill Nichols, author of Introduction to Documentary More information on the book can be found at http: //www.cambriapress.com/books/9781604979237.cfm. This book is in the Cambria Global Performing Arts Series headed by John M. Clum (Duke University)."

Documenting Gay Men

Documenting Gay Men

This book charts an evolution in gay identity within American reality television and documentary film. Through focusing on the performative potential of gay men, it examines the emergence of the independent gay citizen as a bold new voice rejecting subjugation within the media. Through examining productions as diverse as An American Family, Tongues United, Silverlake Life, The Real World, Paternal Instinct, Trembling Before G-D, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and many others, this book explores how gay people as teens, devoted couples, parents, inspiring individuals and influential producers have contributed to the progression of gay identity in domestic arenas. These portrayals are played out while discussing AIDS, race, religion, the development of same-sex family forms, the issues of procreation and gay marriage and the changing views of gay men as both creative producers and responsible social agents. In these forms of entertainment, gay social actors as political agents challenge dominant ideas, and invent new social worlds.

Good As You

Good As You

‘One of the most important books about gay culture in recent times’ The Quietus Long-listed for the Polari First Book Prize In 1984 the pulsing electronics and soft vocals of Smalltown Boy would become an anthem uniting gay men. A month later, an aggressive virus, HIV, would be identified and a climate of panic and fear would spread across the nation, marginalising an already ostracised community. Yet, out of this terror would come tenderness and 30 years later, the long road to gay equality would climax with the passing of same sex marriage. Paul Flynn charts this astonishing pop cultural and societal U-turn via the cultural milestones that effected change—from Manchester’s self-selection as Britain’s gay capital to the real-time romance of Elton John and David Furnish’s eventual marriage. Including candid interviews from major protagonists, such as Kylie, Russell T Davies, Will Young, Holly Johnson and Lord Chris Smith, as well as the relative unknowns crucial to the gay community, we see how an unlikely group of bedfellows fought for equality both front of stage and in the wings. This is the story of Britain’s brothers, cousins and sons. Sometimes it is the story of their fathers and husbands. It is one of public outrage and personal loss, the (not always legal) highs and the desperate lows, and the final collective victory as gay men were final recognised, as Good As You.
