They prayed so fervently for me, and now my life is again on the trail of adventure that I hope will lead to my career as an artist.' Relaxed and grateful to be alive, I drifted off to sleep. THE END Daniel Kroff's adventure to be an ...
Daniel Kroff’s adventure to be an artist found himself on a ranch in Central Florida. Bought old man Ed’s black cowpony. Daniel, only fifteen and a half years old, became known as the Kid. The old man takes a liking to him and teaches the Kid to cow punch and shoot his .22 rifle straight. This becomes handy when faced with a rattlesnake that’s ready to strike some lumberjacks setting up a sawmill. Rounding up cattle, mending fences, finding calves in palmetto patches and messy job of doctoring those that had screw worms. Also to face Ace Scoggins and his boys, who were enemies of old man Ed. The Kid had to conquer the tragedy of Black Hammock. These things he did not expect on adventure to be an artist.
Cattle stealing Daniel Kroff did not like especially on the ranch where he worked "He ain't that fast is he?" Dave asked. "Pretty fast." Scooter warned. "I wouldn't try if I were you, Dave." Was Daniel's response. Skeeter sweated, his cheeks twitched, his lips tight. He was nervous. Scooter being unsettled exposed shock. I stared at them sternly. (The brothers had seen that before) My eyes steadfast, my blood flowed fast through my body. Calmly waiting for their first move. It happened, Dave went for his gun. My pistol cleared leather and fired instantly

The New York Times Best Historical Fiction of 2020 The Guardian's Best Fiction of 2020 Thrillist's Best Books of the Year Daniel Kehlmann transports the medieval legend of the trickster Tyll Ulenspiegel to the seventeenth century in an enchanting work of magical realism, macabre humor, and rollicking adventure. Tyll is a scrawny boy growing up in a quiet village until his father, a miller with a forbidden interest in alchemy and magic, is found out by the church. After Tyll flees with the baker’s daughter, he falls in with a traveling performer who teaches him his trade. As a juggler and a jester, Tyll forges his own path through a world devastated by the Thirty Years’ War, evading witch-hunters, escaping a collapsed mine outside a besieged city, and entertaining the exiled King and Queen of Bohemia along the way. The result is both a riveting story and a moving tribute to the power of art in the face of the senseless brutality of history. Translated from the German by Ross Benjamin
